Sand Island Excursion
DAY TRIPS
Sand Island Excursion!
Explore the sea caves of Sand Island
Make the 3 mile crossing from beautiful Little Sand Bay over to Sand Island. This island has some wonderful and deep sea caves! Have lunch in Justice Bay. Enjoy a hike to the historic lighthouse.
This day trip is dependent on conditions. Also, participants should have at least some experience sea kayaking. Or, schedule this as a second sea cave day trip. Do the mainland sea caves on your first day to get some paddling reflexes & then be ready to paddle to Sand Island on your second day.
Cost is $160 per person.
Trip includes guides, gear and lunch.
Typically we will wear wetsuits so bring shorts, tights or a swimsuit to wear underneath them.
Typically Tandem Kayaks are used as they tend to be more stable and a bit faster. Solo kayaks are an option, however, you’ll need to discuss this with your guide ahead of time.
Our automatic booking accepts up to 6 on any given day. If you have a group size that exceeds availability, e-mail us to see if we can accommodate your group with an extra guide.

SCHEDULE YOUR SAND ISLAND TRIP
-
What do I wear?Typically we will wear wetsuits so shorts, tights, swimsuit or something similar is best. Bring a layer as it can sometimes be cooler on the water. Bring a dry bag or ziplock bag if you plan to bring a phone for photos.
-
Where do we go?On half day trips we will be paddling the "Mainland Sea Caves" area in the park. This four mile out and back shoreline paddle launches and lands at Meyers Beach.
-
Do you allow dogs?Sorry, due to limited space in the kayaks we are unable to allow dogs.
-
What about bad weather? If we are not able to go out due to weather or if you do not think it would be a good experience (due to rain, cold, etc.) you have the option to either reschedule or have a full refund. Lake Superior is notorious for it's quickly changing weather conditions, forecasts often change dramaticaly up until your trip departure. We will do everything we can to get you out on the water safely! We ask for flexibilty in situations where weather and other events are out of our control.
-
Is there an age or weight limit? We ask that paddlers are at least 100 lbs and/or 12 years old. In our experience it starts to become difficult to accommodate at about 270 lbs or above as it is hard to maintain stability and balance in the kayak but contact us for more information or body types.
