The Wilderness Life Support First Aid course is designed to provide an individual with an in-depth knowledge of wilderness medicine and the basic skills to treat the most common injuries and illnesses encountered in the wilderness.

Course Objectives

Aimed at first responders, professional guides, expedition leaders, outdoor professionals, backcountry enthusiasts, and lay people who want a deeper understanding of wilderness medicine.

To teach patient assessment and treatment guidelines for life support until definitive care or evacuation is available

To train the provider in methods for managing medical and trauma emergencies and urgencies in the wilderness when evacuation is unavailable or unnecessary

8:30 - 10:00        Spinal Immobilization and Patient Transport (Practical Skills)

10:00 - 11:00     Drowning / Lightning (Lecture)

11:00 - 12:30     Common Medical Problems (Chest pain, Respiratory, Nervous, N/V, abdominal                                                      pain, allergies / anaphylaxis / EpiPen™ practice) (Lecture)

12:30 - 1:00        Lunch

1:00 - 1:30           First Aid Kits (Lecture / Demo)

1:30 - 2:30           Wound Management (Lecture)

2:30 - 3:30           Wound Management (Practical Skills)

3:30 - 4:30           Heat / Cold / Frostbite (Lecture)

4:30 - 5:00           Bites and Stings (Lecture)

Sunday, May 3rd

1:30 - 2:00             WLS Written Certification Test
